DISMANTLING UNDERWAY!
23 March 2005
Contractors moved onto the site of Workington's derelict shed in mid-March to begin the task of carefully dismantling it. Over the next two months, men from a specialist firm based in Nottinghamshire will reduce the shed to a pile of reusable components. It will then be transported two hundred miles south to a secure storage site at the Great Central in Leicestershire.
It’s estimated there are around two hundred tons of steelwork to dismantle and move. The mighty stonewalls will also be heading south, though the brickwork will be left behind. The components should be on the road in early April. Its expected the Workington site will be clear by early Summer.
Several visits by GCR working parties has resulted in a complete survey of the building, and plans for putting it back together in Leicestershire are being drawn up.
